Aside from being wholly sexist this is also kind of a weird denial that there was sexual assault in the military before there were women in combat.

Before it was other soldiers, it was contractors.

Before it was contractors, it was locals.

This isn’t some viking shit, this is real fucking life. There has always been this stupid colonialist bullshit. We had a worldwide conversation about it in the 1990s during the whole Serbian horror, but it seems like we’ve just been really quiet about it ever since.

I think that’s the part that really makes me angry. The fact that Trump has said something dumb for an obvious political agenda doesn’t surprise me. But women in combat is something a lot of us have wanted for a very long time specifically because we felt that a lot of this colonialist patriarchal bullshit would start to subside when commanders had to take responsibility for their soldiers’ victimization. Up until now, they had always been able to say “not my soldiers, not my problem”. Beyond solidarity, commanders feel a lot of moral responsibility to stand behind their soldiers specifically because there’s a lot of trust among comrades, even if it’s undeserved.

Obviously this goes a lot deeper into classical culture and the long-standing tradition of war itself, but it continues today, too. Gaddafi ordered his troops to use rape as punishment. There’s evidence it’s happening right now as part of the Syrian civil war.

Hey Trump, instead of some stupid fucking birth certificate, why don’t you offer a multimillion dollar reward for helping to bring war rapists to justice?
